  Naim Alijahej is the manager and co-owner of a dairy production plant in Berdica, a commune near Shkodra. He is now in his early fifties and owns a dairy business with his two younger brothers, Zija and Izet. Naim worked as an agronomist before the 1990s. Like most other Albanians, he and his brothers lost their jobs after the collapse of the communist regime. more

• Edmond Kasapi - Cattle Farmer

  Agriculture is a family tradition for Edmond Kasapi, whose parents used to run a small livestock farm. He helped look after the animals at an early age and soon decided that he, too, wanted to be a farmer when he grew up. more

• Katerina Abdiu - Nurse and Savings Customer

  Katerina Abdiu was born in Tirana in 1954. After completing her studies at a medical high school, she trained in nursing at the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Centre in Tirana. It was not long before she found employment at the main city hospital, where she still enjoys her vocation as a nurse to this day. more

• Ilmi Shehu - Carpentry

  Ilmi Shehu was born and raised in Tepelena, a small city in southern Albania, and here he started his career as a carpenter in 1981. During the Communist era he was a member of a cooperative, and after 1990 he found occasional work repairing furniture. more

• Zamira Dajçi - Handicraft

  Zamira discovered a very special business niche in Albania and has made a career out of an exceptional talent. She produces special traditional handicraft items that are in great demand in Albania not only by tourists but also by Albanians themselves. During the communist era, she worked in a state owned company but later started working independently. more

• Kostaq Pëllumbi - Remittances story

  Kostaq Pëllumbi was born in 1944 in Korça, a city in Albania near the Greek border. After working hard for many years, he and his wife are now retired, receiving a modest pension. Kostaq had been a mechanic in a nearby factory and his wife worked as an agronomic specialist. more

  Selim Roshlani has always lived in a picturesque village just outside Fier - about two hours drive from Tirana. This is home for him and he wants to stay here forever. more
